What's Up With Wheatgrass? Learn the Essentials Here

grassIt's time to take some shots.

No, we're not talkin' top-shelf tequila or Jager bombs. We're talkin' wheatgrass, baby.

Amazing Grass

One part of my daily routine is a shot or two of wheatgrass. The benefits of this magic elixir compensate for the odd taste of the juice. (Beauty is pain, gals.) If you've always turned up your nose at those little cups with the pukey-green goop, you might want to give it a whirl. Wheatgrass is one of the most nutritious substances known to man. It does all kinds of amazing crap for your bod, your brain, and, more importantly, it can often cure a mean hangover. Hallelujah to that!

If you need more convincing, here are some of the wonderful reasons to get your wheatgrass on:

Antibiotic. Wheatgrass helps rid your bod of unfriendly bacteria and balances you out with good germs.

aminoAmino Acids. With 12 amino acids, wheatgrass contains all eight essential amino acids (those ones your body can't make naturally).

Appetite Suppressant. As a natural appetite suppressant, wheatgrass is great for those trying to cut a few calories. Bonus? It also helps rev your metabolism.

Body Cleanser. Since it's rich in chlorophyll, it clears away toxins stored in cells or fatty tissues. It also sweeps out your liver and gives you a good heavy-metal detox.

Deodorizer. Stink much? Wheatgrass can reduce or eliminate offensive body and breath odors. (But don't drink it on a first date. That's weird.)

Diuretic. Forget coffee. You can reduce bloat and get things going "down there" by drinking your magic green juice. It helps break down impacted fecal matter in the colon.

Energizer. It takes minutes to digest wheatgrass, which means your body assimilates the healing properties of the juice quickly and gives you instant energy.

Illness. Sick? Try a shot or two for sinus problems, as it helps clear up congestion. Also works for colds.

Drink Up

Many places will provide an orange slice to counteract the after taste of a wheatgrass shot. Don’t eat the orange! It ruins many of the advantages of the wheatgrass. Also, drink it on an empty stomach. If you feel nauseous after you drink it, fear not. That's a good sign. Why? It means your body is literally releasing nasty toxins so they can be carried away or destroyed, hence the queasy feeling.

See? Now go have a few shots of something other than booze, princesss.

This sounds great, but how do you MAKE it? I have a juicer, but it seems like just juicing the WG would take an awful lot of it.  Any suggestions?

i just started growing and juicing wheat grass.  i knew there were benefits but i didn't realize how many until i read this. i agree that empty stomach is best, otherwise it's diluted in the other garbage in the system.  i bought my growing supplies at 'the sprouts people' (google it) and i use a hurom juicer. the hand crank juicers probably work better than the hurom but the hurom works just fine, too. i have to juice 2 5"x5" trays of wheat grass for a 2 oz. shot so i have a constant supply of wheat grass growing near a kitchen window. it is beneficial but i think a week of drinking then a drink break may be the thing for me. i notice after about a week i stop craving it, then i start craving it again.  also, growing in soil is way healthier then other growing mediums, and I'm going to start trying that soon.

juicing it creates a lot of fiber, so i'm not sure if blending it in the vitamix would be ideal (someone commented about this). i also have the vitamix and wondered about it but couldn't find anything about it online.

Thanks for all the info.  I've read from another source that if you use fresh wheat grass, once you blend/mix/etc., you must drink it within 30 minutes for the full benefit.  Also said that frozen is not as beneficial becuase it loses some benefits during the process.  So I'm assuming a WG pill or something like that is useless.  I'll have to check out the website to grow my own and maybe try the frozen at Whole Foods.  I appreciate all the help HBD ladies! ~Barb

I just took my first wheatgrass shot from a powder I bought at WF and it tasted horrible...I'm a big fan off all the benefits so I'm going to try and stick with it!

I have always wanted to try the wheatgrass shots at Jamba Juice. I was told they were terrible and the person never saw any benifits so I have never tried them. After seeing this article I think I was to try WG for sure!

I just recently started adding wheatgrass to my diet. I buy organic, frozen shots. I give it to my children as well and have convinced my husband to start taking it too! I have already seen an increase in energy.

I go to a place once a year in San Diego called the optimum health institute. I drink tons of wheatgrass while I'm there since it's a huge part of the program and I love the results...just not the taste! I wish I was one of those people that love it!
