Hi Martha! I actually called a certified humane egg producer to inquire about this. What I found out, unfortunately, is their egg-laying hens still come from hatcheries that discard male baby chicks - the hatcheries are typically a totally separate business. And once the hens from "certified humane" producers stop producing eggs at a high rate, they are sold for slaughter....sad but true.
