Cleaning Sucks
Healthy, Eco-Friendly Vacuums and Tips on Buying the Right One for Your Lifestyle

If there’s one thing in life that should suck hard, it’s your vacuum. The harder the better. Nothing beats a clean carpet or spotless hardwood floors.  Between the pets, kids and allergies – how do you balance maintaining a toxic-free home while keeping the planet happy? With so many models and choices, it’s hard to figure out which ones are worth the investment.

What You Need to Know

Before buying just any vacuum, look for one that’s energy-efficient while helping to maintain healthy air quality – You don’t want a motor machine that’s gong to re-circulate toxins back into your home [Cough]. It’s important that your vacuum has great suction for a deep-down clean (the innuendos are worse than a Seinfeld episode) to limit bacteria and germ growth.  Here are some tips when researching your new sweeper keeper:

Know HEPA from hype.  Avoid “hepa type” filters, which can actually be 55 percent lower in efficiency than a true HEPA filter.  Look for an authentic HEPA filter – they filter out over 99 percent of airborne bacteria and microscopic spores.  In addition to cutting down on allergens, HEPA filters trap flame-retardants, phthalates and toxic pesticides that bind to household dust. HEPA filters can be washed at home and are easily removed from the vacuum unit.

Look for a commitment. Roughly one in five households purchase a new vacuum cleaner each year. That kinda defeats the purpose. Don’t you want your vacuum to live longer than your last relationship? Look for a sturdy machine that comes with a long warranty and has a plan for part replacements. It’s always best to repair a broken vacuum cleaner before investing in a new one so you’re not contributing to the landfills.  You may spend a bit more upfront, but just think of the long-term savings of not having to continuously buy cheap-ass vacuums.

Don’t bag it.  Bagless vacuum cleaners help lighten the landfill load but emptying compartments can disperse dust and allergens back into the air – severe allergy sufferers should opt for cleaners with bags.  In that case, look for eco-friendly bags.

Don’t get sucked into the amp game.  More power does not mean it’s going to clean faster or better.  Try to get a vacuum with a low-amp motor (eight amp is ideal) or at least one that offers a power-saving mode.

Drop the weight.  There’s no need to buy a vacuum that’s going to require a U-haul to move around.  You do enough heavy lifting in life, why make it difficult?

We cleaned up our act to offer you a round-up of healthy or green vacuuming machines:

GREAT INVESTMENT: Dyson DC 25 Ball. While the motor power is not exactly the most favorable (12 amps), Dyson makes up for it with its washable, bagless filter. National Geographic’s Green Guide has awarded the Dyson DC 25 Ball the “Greenest Buy,” while parts and labor are covered for five years giving it a l-o-n-g shelf life. Its claim to fame: Ball technology to make it easy to maneuver around dusty corners, and Root Cyclone technology so the vacuum won’t lose suction power as it cleans up. $499www.dyson.com.

BETTER AIR QUALITY: Bissell 16N5 “Healthy Home Upright Vacuum.” Specifically designed to filter and improve the home’s air quality, this nifty product has anti-microbial protection to limit the growth of germs and bacteria. They also have an AireTight HEPA filter system that traps 100 percent of dust mites, pollen, ragweed, and mold spores, and 99.9-percent of pet dander. $176.www.amazon.com

SILENT GREEN.  Electrolux UltraSilencer Series EL6984A.  This little bugger delivers on being energy-efficient and quiet!  (Especially great for dogs that freak out every time you do a little voom voom.) In fact, 55- percent of the plastic used in the Ultra Silencer is made from recycled materials.  It also uses 80-percent recycled, unbleached cardboard in the packaging.  It packs a washable HEPA filter, is easy to store, and comes equipped with bags – great for those with allergies, but not so great for landfills so be mindful on the type of bags you buy.  $299, www.ajmadison.com.

Time to clear out the cobwebs.

Late for an Important Date
The Stressful Effects of Being A Tardy Girl

First, you couldn’t find a thing to wear. Then you just had to check your email one last time before you ran out the door.  But when you jumped into your car, low and behold, you remember that your lovely vehicle is running on fumes. Now you’re running 20 minutes behind and are stuck at a red light behind dueling senior citizens who can barely see over the wheel.

Stress much?

Being late sucks.  Literally.  It sucks the positive energy right out of each of us through anger, worry, fear and anxiety – all of which add up to the dreaded “s-word.”

Physical Effects of Excess Stress
According to medicinenet.com, the effects that elevated stress can have on our poor little selves range from:

  • Headaches
  • Intestinal problems
  • Sleep disorders
  • Anxiety
  • Mood swings
  • Muscle tension
  • Poor diet habits
  • Increased use of alcohol, drugs and cigarettes

Sound terrible? You’re catching on, Ms. Smarty Pants. The good news is that you, as the “Stress-ee,” have choices when it comes to managing the many things in your life that cause unnecessary stress.  Cutting tardiness out of your M.O. is a great start.

The Benefits of Punctuality
Take some tips from Diana DeLonzor, author of Never Be Late Again, so you can quit being such a stress machine:

Get to the root of the problem. Figure out the root cause behind why you’re always late – an ABC News report broke the “why” down into four types of people who are always late.  Which one are you?

A.   Rationalizer Type – it’s always someone or something else’s fault

B.   Absent Minded Professor – You’re forgetful, scattered and disorganized

C.   Deadline/Producer Type – You get a psychological zing or adrenaline rush out of having a jam-packed schedule

D.   Rebel Type – you get a self-induced high out of defying authority and you feel important when you know people are waiting for you.

Decide you want to change. Notice the effects on family, friends and colleagues.  Stop making excuses and commit to fixing the problem.

Verbally announce you’re trying to change. It’s kinda like AA, honey. The first step is admitting it. Ask friends and family to help you but be ready for them to be cynical.  Let them have their feelings and show them you’re serious by actually doing it.
Clock yourself and keep a journal. Log how long it really takes to dry your hair or get the kids to school.  Get the facts and embrace the truth so that you can plan realistically and set yourself up for success.

Time tasks. Setting a timer for tasks like laundry, taking a shower and talking on the phone can help keep you on track (not to mention save water and electricity).

Be early … no excuses. If the idea of sitting around with nothing to do makes you crazy, bring something you can read, do or text while you wait. Make a list when you wake up of the quick things you need to do that day like pay a bill over the phone, schedule a date with the plumber or wish Gramps a Happy Birthday.

Schedule a 15-minute time cushion before and after commitments. Cramming too much into one day doesn’t allow for the unexpected.  Spread your commitments out over the week. Your body and mind will thank you for it.

Better never than late.

Let’s Move!
Michelle Obama Takes On Childhood Obesity

Your mama packed applesauce in your tin box while the mean girls traded Ding Dongs and Ho-Hos during recess. Well, if the shoe fits.  So, we get it, you weren’t popular.  Big shit. Today, you’re not only hot stuff – you’re a healthy bitch.  Now it’s your turn to motivate today’s youth to drop the pounds and eat right.

Let’s Move, Little Debbie.

Child obesity has become more prevalent due to unhealthy diets, increased food intake, and inadequate physical activity. According to the CDC, obesity levels among children have tripled over the last 20 years.  Seven percent of 15-year-old children are now considered clinically obese.

But the always lovely First Lady, Michelle Obama, has created the Let’s Move! campaign to generate awareness of child obesity and the negative effects it poses for our future. She has made it her business to not only get children moving, but to also improve the food source in public schools across the nation.  The First Lady has asked everyone to get involved, so pay attention:

Cook Up Some Change. Hundreds of chefs from more than 37 states gathered on the South Lawn with Michelle Obama earlier this month to support the “Chefs Move to Schools” program.  Chefs are encouraged to bond with their local schools to help students learn where food comes from and develop healthy habits.  Rachael Ray has stepped up, and currently, 2,330 chefs and 688 schools have signed up to be a part of the Chef’s Move to School Initiative. Are you a gifted chef or maybe know one you that you think should get involved? Send them here to get cooking.

Do Good.  Let’s Move! and GOOD Magazine are working together to help address the challenge of childhood obesity by raising awareness.  You can start doing some good by entering their contest.  They are looking for an infographic that shows the current state of children’s health, and illustrates some avenue to combat the epidemic.  Submission are due July 6, and the winner gets lots of perks … like White House blog exposure on theLet’s Move! site and much more.

Take it Old School.  Are you a proud parent, stand-up citizen or just want to add something else to your busy plate? Help your local school get healthy by joining the Alliance for a Healthier Generation and Healthy Schools Program Network. Here you’ll get free access to a wide-range of tools and resources that will pave the way for you. Click here for more.  You can always pass out a signed petition among parents and students to get the attention of higher school officials and board members to make changes to that dated menu.  Cheesy fries are so yesterday.

Let’s Move! People. Join Michelle Obama, community leaders, teachers, doctors, nurses, and parents in a nationwide campaign to tackle the challenge of childhood obesity. To learn more about Let’s Move! and how you can make a difference,  click here.

Summer is the best time to take action before the bell rings.

Ten Bucks for Our Wildlife
What You Can Do to Help the National Wildlife Federation and Other Organizations Save Our Wildlife Amid the BP Oil Spill

As the biggest environmental catastrophe in U.S. history continues to spill 60,000 barrels of oil into the ocean each day, the big question remains: When’s it gonna stop? Scientists are working around the clock to come up with solutions, and BP just signed a deal with Kevin Costner’s company, Ocean Therapy Solutions, for 32 units of the “dream machine” that is capable of separating water from oil. The verdict is, nevertheless, still out.

In the midst of the irreparable damage this has done to our oceans and the thousands of people who have lost their livelihood, our marine life off the Gulf of Mexico is in a serious struggle for survival.

Coastal Louisiana’s wetlands account for 40-percent of wetlands in the U.S., while more than 400 fish and wildlife species rely on this habitat for food, shelter and breeding. (Species, not fish) Vast amounts of methane trapped in crude oil are creating “dead zones” that are depleting oxygen and suffocating sea animals. Marshes that are home to sea turtles, bottlenose dolphins and birds are being set aflame, AKA “the burn box,” to prevent oil lying on the surface from making it to the shore. And gulls, pelicans and other birds that land on the water are experiencing deadly hypothermia as the oil destroys the insulating quality of their feathers.

But, we have a choice here
: Remain helpless and continue to point fingers at BP, let Obama decide who to chew out or  … Do something.

The National Wildlife Federation (NWF) is on the frontlines doing just that, and they need a little helping hand.

Here are a few things you can do to help:

Volunteer. NWF, its five Gulf state affiliates and local and national non-profits are putting together Gulf Coast Surveillance Teams to support wildlife rescue and rehab efforts, restore damaged coastal ecosystems and track and report on the damage. If you are skilled in wildlife observation, or knowledgeable about the Gulf Coast, its waters, or any of the species of birds, fishes, turtles or marine mammals that are at risk, click here to answer a few questions and sign up.

If you lack the experience or knowledge but still want to help, you can sign up for the Coalition’s Volunteer Gulf Response effort. They need volunteers for everything from rescue and caring for injured wildlife to shoreline clean-up to food preparation and distribution.

Emerald CoastKeeper and Greenpeace U.S.A. are also looking for volunteer crews to help with clean-up efforts.

Donate. We get it, times are tough. But think about it: Skip one glass of wine at dinner and you’ll be helping save an animal from the oil catastrophe. You can donate in any increment here or text “WILDLIFE” to 20222 and donate $10 to support Gulf wildlife. (Participating carriers include AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, Sprint, Virgin, Cricket, AllTel and U.S. Cellular) Your donation will just appear on a future phone bill and go to support on-the-ground efforts and long-term mammal recovery.

Be Loud. If we get one thing out of this whole mess, it’s that it’s time to fend ourselves off our oil dependency and get America cleaner. Send a message to our leaders and U.S. senators to pass clean energy legislation today. It’s easy. All you have to do is enter your name, address and phone number and click send. The letter is pre-prepared for your convenience, but you can personalize the message, too. Click here to send your letter.

Other Opportunities For Our Fellow Big Mouths

Hands Across the Sand is a grassroots international movement that encourages people to go to their local beach on June 26 at 11AM, form lines in the sand and join hands at noon to say NO to Offshore Oil Drilling, YES to Clean Energy. Visit www.handsacrossthesand.com for more info.

Join Global Green U.S.A., FUEL and LEAN on June 29 in New Orleans, Louisiana for the March for Clean Energy. Hundreds of people will dress in black trash bags and march through the French Quarter, then lie down in Jackson Square to depict a human oil spill. Gathering kicks off at 3PM on the steps next to Café Du Monde near Jackson Square and St. Louis Cathedral.

Join and Recruit. Join the NWF’s “Help Wildlife Impacted by the BP Oil Spill” Facebook page, recruit your friends and even ask that friends donate funds to Gulf Coast wildlife in your honor in lieu of birthday gifts. Hairicide Investigation
Holistic Nutritionist Meg Gotelli Goes Straight to Your Dirty Roots to Solve Your Health Problems

Sometimes you wish you knew what was going on in that silly little body of yours. You got eight hours of sleep every night last week but felt like a walking Zombie. You’ve been putting on a few extra lb’s though you got enough mileage in last week to make Prefontaine look like a pussy. And the metal detectors went off at the airport the other day and you were, well, metal-less. Hmm … a slight hint?

As it turns out, your hair follicles are quite the crime scene – behind the yellow tape are the clues as to why your body is performing like a two-pump chump.

Mobile nutritionist Meg Gotelli unlocks all the secrets to your nutritional needs through a snip of your hair. Easily collected, Meg comes to your office or home, with bag and scissors in tow, to meet and collect a small hair sample to send in for lab results. Yeah, but are they accurate?  Analyzing more than 50,000 hair samples a year, the state-of-the-art lab boasts sophisticated ICP-Mass Spectometry and monthly QA/QC studies to confirm accuracy. If you don’t live in sunny California, Meg can do all of this virtually by sending in a hair follicle via snail mail, then explaining the results and providing consultation via phone and email.

But what’s that snip gonna tell? A lot, indeed. When you get your blood taken by a physician or specialist, it only reveals 24 hours worth of your body’s chemistry. But at the root of your hair, six weeks of your body’s chemistry gets locked into your hair shaft as it grows from your scalp.

Feeling tired or burnt out? Maybe you’ve got adrenal fatigue. Since minerals such as potassium, zinc, magnesium, iron and calcium show up in your results, a hair analyst can identify an imbalance of minerals as an instigator of low energy, as well as which gland is weak. These glands may be tiny, but they are responsible for about 100 bodily tasks, including keeping your energy, hormones and sugar balanced.

Wonder if the lead in your lipstick or your hair dye is in your body? Or maybe why you’re setting off metal detectors like a damn lost treasure at sea? Too much mercury – Cool it on the sushi. If so, Meg puts you on the metal detox program to support your body in getting rid of toxic elements; email support keeps you on target.
In Meg’s philosophy, a big reason for getting your hair mineral analysis is to keep

you healthy not only in the present, but in the future. Beauty and wellness is determined by what you eat, drink and supplement, met by what you don’t.File the case, Caruso. This crime is solved.

Want your hair analyzed? Call Meg at 310.428.0066 or visit www.newstrition.com.

Sara Snow & The Six Green Tips
Author, Green Living Expert & Television Personality Sara Snow Offers Up Some Simple Tips on a Healthier, Green Bathroom

You may see her face gracing the pages of Better Homes and Gardens, Lucky and Harper’s Bazaar for her eco thumb, but Sara Snow was getting her green on far before it was hip. The daughter of Tim and Pattie Redmond – the founding family of Eden Foods and pioneers behind the natural foods movement – Sara was raised on composting, organic veggies and a profound respect for nature.

While her dreams to be in the bright lights led her to roles as an Emmy-winning television producer for ESPN’s SportsCentury series and later a morning news reporter for Fox Indianapolis, her roots never snipped their ties. Sara was soon creating eco-lifestyle television concepts for Discovery Channel and advising the first-ever 24-hour green on-air network, Discovery’s “Planet Green.”

Fast forward a few years and a whole lot of buzz about a lil’ theory called “global warming,” and Sara has another exciting snack on her plate – her much-anticipated debut book, Sara Snow’s Fresh Living: The Essential Room-by-Room Guide to a Greener, Healthier Family and Home. She continues to spread the good, green word with regular segments on CNN.com LIVE and columns on Treehugger, while traveling the country to speak about simple and effective ways to green your business, home and community.

We asked the lovely Ms. Snow to share her tips on a healthy, green powder room and personal upkeep. After all, we all need a potty break.

Tip #1: Recycle Your Water. Water is scarce, people. You could be wasting as much as seven gallons of water per minute while you wait for your shower to heat up in the morning.  Keep a bucket close by and place it under the spigot as you wait for the water to warm up.  Then use this to water your houseplants.

Tip #2: Save the Bath for a Special Occasion. A full bathtub can use as much as 50 to 70 gallons of water!  If you must take a bath, plug the drain right away, adjust the temperature as the tub fills up and only fill it half way.

Tip #3: If it’s Yellow, Let it Mellow.  When I was young, we did many things to conserve water like turning it off when we brushed our teeth and only flushing the toilet after a few people had used it.  But the cardinal rule: If it’s brown, always flush it down!

Tip #4: Keep it Simple. You don’t need overly scented or processed lotions for your face or body.  Try a natural oil like Marula Oil by the Leakey Collection.  It works to hydrate and heal. Great for your face or parched body parts.

Tip #5: Give Yourself a Healthy Mani-Pedi. The three harshest ingredients in nail polish are formaldehyde, toluene and phthalates. Try a nail polish free from all three. Many big brands are starting to come on board, or try the very hot “chic black” from Suncoat Naturals.  It’s vegan, free of the Big 3, and can be removed without chemicals.

Tip #6: Scent Naturally. Instead of traditional perfumes which can be loaded with synthetic fragrances as well as alcohol and petroleum based fillers, try an essential oil blend that is both unique and healthy.  I wear the Invoke Essence by Ambre Blends

Green as snow.

Spit, Please
Natural Toothpastes that Make Our Smile Happy

Clenching your fists, you glance over at Mommy with crossed fingers hoping that both of you walk out with lollipops. Please Lord, I swear I will brush more. I pinkie swear! Just when your dentist is breathing way too hard on top of you (which will later be cause for therapy), you hear him muddle something about fluoride. Sound familiar?

Like most of us, you likely grew up in a household of traditional toothpaste. Many dentists suggest we use fluoride in our pasty to prevent cavities. But get this shit: Right on the tubes there’s a warning not to swallow more toothpaste than is used for brushing, and if you do, seek professional help or contact a poison control center.

As if it might not get swallowed at some point. Yeah, that’s what he said. So what’s the problem?

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS). SLS is placed into toothpastes and some mouthwashes in order to create foaming. Foaming is all bells and whistles, folks. It won’t get your teeth any cleaner. But do know this – the harshness of this chemical has been linked with causing microscopic damage to the oral tissue that lines the inside of your mouth, which then leads to canker sores. Ouchie.

Tooth Sensitivity. Toothpaste can also cause tooth sensitivity, which happens over time when the tooth enamel is worn away. Many toothpastes are also too abrasive and can actually strip away the tooth enamel — one striptease too many for your busy life — and are typically full of sugar promoting the growth of bacteria that causes tooth decay. Double Ouchie.

Fluoride.  Although scientific research has supported the benefits of fluoride treatment in preventing tooth decay, many people question its safety and effectiveness. Several interest groups say increases in dental fluorosis and fluoride levels in water are exceeding optimal levels. These groups say fluoride treatments are unnecessary and more dangerous than originally thought. Hmmm, your choice.

There are plenty of great, natural toothpastes on the market that are good for your teeth and gums. These natural products use:

Zinc Citrate. A natural occurring mineral that helps control the calcification of plaque into tartar

Natural Silica. Derived from sand, improves cleaning and gently whitens without harsh abrasives or bleaching ingredients

Xylitol. Helps to remove plaque

Here are some of our favorite recommendations that are Sodium Lauryl Sulfate free and contain all-natural ingredients:

Tom’s of Maine Natural Clean & Gentle CareThis tube is specifically SLS and fluoride-free. Read the labels because Tom’s offers a few pastes that have SLS and fluoride (again, your choice). $4.23,Drugstore.com.

Jason Natural Powersmile Toothpaste Vanilla Mint. Contains three natural whiteners to polish and whiten without harsh abrasives. Exclusive antibacterial Perilla Seed Extract helps prevent tartar build-up. Peppermint essential oils leave your mouth feeling all tingly. $4.09,Vitacost.com.

The Natural Dentist. This powerful pasty offers a herbal blend for gum health. It strengthens teeth, prevents cavities, protects against acid erosion and freshens breath. $6.19, Drugstore.com

An Old-School Spiritual Practice May Help to Channel Negative Energy and Release Your Daily Stresses

reiki2Arms outstretched. Palms open. Eyes shut. I could feel my feet sinking deep into soft, warm sand as the waves rhythmically washed over my legs like an hypnotic Zero 7 track, dispelling stress and trauma from my overworked body as that cranky ass meter maid faded like a distant memory at the threshold of an endless turquoise sea.

No, this story does not end with a shrieking alarm clock jolting me back to my senses.  This wasn’t a dream.  It was Reiki.

Call me melodramatic. I can handle it. But stumbling upon this life-changing experience that sounded like some kind of cool new-agey meditation deal, has had its effect on me. I thought, why the H not? Chances are for the taking.

A spiritual practice that is rumored to be born in Mount Kurama, Japan in 1926, Reiki has been used for ages as a form of alternative medicine to alleviate stress, promote relaxation and healing.

Though little scientific evidence exists that the practice is effective in the treatment of any condition, modern-day Reiki master Julie Roberts feels differently. Dedicating her life to healing people by channeling energy through their bodies, Roberts uses her intuitive empathetic sensitivity to help her patients balance their emotional, spiritual, physiological and mental states.

reikiRoberts discovered her magical healing powers after suffering from a severe case of sinusitis. She was told that her initial surgery was not enough to cure her; a second, more invasive surgery was scheduled some weeks later. During that period, Roberts decided that she wanted to take matters into her own hands and try to heal herself through daily meditation. In a pre-op checkup six weeks after the diagnosis, the doctor walked away startled when the CAT scan produced a clear image. Roberts realized that Reiki may not only be her pot o’ gold, but maybe a treat at the end of the rainbow for women across the world.

During the session with Roberts, I closed my eyes and sat cross-legged in a circle, held hands, chanted, and welcomed the ocean with open arms. I may have looked silly standing immobile by the water for a good half-hour with my eyes closed, but while other beachgoers were working on their tans, I was working on my personal stability. I was able to focus on others who would benefit from healing powers and on my own personal lingering tensions. After the hour I felt surprisingly replenished and invigorated, despite my initial skepticism.

So, take a deep breath and release. It’s worth a shot.

How Tony Robbins Rocked My World

There comes a time in every girl’s life when she must take a moment to acknowledge those who have inspired her. While Stella McCartney, Anthony Kiedis and my Brazilian hair straightener all tie for a close second, bear with me for a minute while I sing a few praises for my boy, Tony Robbins.

If you’ve read the dedication page of two of my books, Skinny Bitch and Skinny Bitchin’, you’ll see “the motivation guy” carries a little light in my heart. I’ve always been a fan, but changed my status to “harmless stalker” after meeting him in person for the first time a few weeks ago. Thanks to our anonymous lil’ friend, Twitter, Tony personally extended an invitation to invite me to his “Unleash the Power Within” seminar in San Jose, Calif. He had already played a major role in my decision to take a big risk, and I don’t know, become an author. But last week … oops, he did it again.

It was truly an understatement to say it was an amazing, incredible, powerful, emotionally charged and energetic experience. Yes, I like adjectives. Rather than just tell you to make shit happen, he gives you the precise tools to help make changes in your life. While the room does heat up, it’s not a born-again virgin, cliché experience. It’s more like a practical, step-by-step, less-talk-and-more-action type of teaching.

Oh, and once I was pumped up enough to start the next world movement, I voluntarily walked on fire (AKA hot burning coals). Yes I did. And no, I didn’t burn my feet. And yes, Tony cheered me on like I was General Motors and he was the government.

Tony has taught me a state of mind that has helped me to forget any fears that once stopped me in my tracks, and instead empower myself to roll with the punches. We’re not all made of steel, but embracing “I Am Woman, Hear Me Roar” is easier than you think …

Let’s be honest, too. The man is slightly good looking. If you weren’t yet convinced, that has to count for something, right?

Check out his Web site at www.tonyrobbins.com, or better yet, sign up for Tony Robbins’s other seminars: Date With Destiny, Life Mastery and Wealth Mastery.
