If there’s one thing in life that should suck hard, it’s your vacuum. The harder the better. Nothing beats a clean carpet or spotless hardwood floors. Between the pets, kids and allergies – how do you balance maintaining a toxic-free home while keeping the planet happy? With so many models and choices, it’s hard to figure out which ones are worth the investment.

What You Need to Know

Before buying just any vacuum, look for one that’s energy-efficient while helping to maintain healthy air quality – You don’t want a motor machine that’s gong to re-circulate toxins back into your home [Cough]. It’s important that your vacuum has great suction for a deep-down clean (the innuendos are worse than a Seinfeld episode) to limit bacteria and germ growth. Here are some tips when researching your new sweeper keeper:

Know HEPA from hype. Avoid “hepa type” filters, which can actually be 55 percent lower in efficiency than a true HEPA filter. Look for an authentic HEPA filter – they filter out over 99 percent of airborne bacteria and microscopic spores. In addition to cutting down on allergens, HEPA filters trap flame-retardants, phthalates and toxic pesticides that bind to household dust. HEPA filters can be washed at home and are easily removed from the vacuum unit.

Look for a commitment. Roughly one in five households purchase a new vacuum cleaner each year. That kinda defeats the purpose. Don’t you want your vacuum to live longer than your last relationship? Look for a sturdy machine that comes with a long warranty and has a plan for part replacements. It’s always best to repair a broken vacuum cleaner before investing in a new one so you’re not contributing to the landfills. You may spend a bit more upfront, but just think of the long-term savings of not having to continuously buy cheap-ass vacuums.

Don’t bag it. Bagless vacuum cleaners help lighten the landfill load but emptying compartments can disperse dust and allergens back into the air – severe allergy sufferers should opt for cleaners with bags. In that case, look for eco-friendly bags.

Don’t get sucked into the amp game. More power does not mean it’s going to clean faster or better. Try to get a vacuum with a low-amp motor (eight amp is ideal) or at least one that offers a power-saving mode.

Drop the weight. There’s no need to buy a vacuum that’s going to require a U-haul to move around. You do enough heavy lifting in life, why make it difficult?

We cleaned up our act to offer you a round-up of healthy or green vacuuming machines:

GREAT INVESTMENT: Dyson DC 25 Ball. While the motor power is not exactly the most favorable (12 amps), Dyson makes up for it with its washable, bagless filter. National Geographic’s Green Guide has awarded the Dyson DC 25 Ball the “Greenest Buy,” while parts and labor are covered for five years giving it a l-o-n-g shelf life. Its claim to fame: Ball technology to make it easy to maneuver around dusty corners, and Root Cyclone technology so the vacuum won’t lose suction power as it cleans up. $499. www.dyson.com.

BETTER AIR QUALITY: Bissell 16N5 “Healthy Home Upright Vacuum.” Specifically designed to filter and improve the home’s air quality, this nifty product has anti-microbial protection to limit the growth of germs and bacteria. They also have an AireTight HEPA filter system that traps 100 percent of dust mites, pollen, ragweed, and mold spores, and 99.9-percent of pet dander. $176.www.amazon.com

SILENT GREEN. Electrolux UltraSilencer Series EL6984A. This little bugger delivers on being energy-efficient and quiet! (Especially great for dogs that freak out every time you do a little voom voom.) In fact, 55- percent of the plastic used in the Ultra Silencer is made from recycled materials. It also uses 80-percent recycled, unbleached cardboard in the packaging. It packs a washable HEPA filter, is easy to store, and comes equipped with bags – great for those with allergies, but not so great for landfills so be mindful on the type of bags you buy. $299, www.ajmadison.com.

Could your yoga instructor be any cooler?I mean, really. Their voices are angelic, they can carry on intelligent conversations with the trees and mountains, and think the world is all sunshine and rainbows. Yogis just don’t eat from the same bowl of Wheaties, damnit.

Apparently, they don’t drink from the same cup of tea, either. Until now.

Made for Yogis by Yogis (and wannabes), YogaEarth is a nutritional supplement you just pour into your tea, water, beverage or food that is designed to keep you physiologically in balance with the lifestyle and dynamics of yoga. Created by 250 of the nation’s top Yogis, the phytonutrient powder melds elements of both Eastern and Western nutrition to prepare the mind and body both pre- and post- workout.

Just how do they do it? YogaEarth works with your body’s inner chemistry and a set of nutrients – protein, amino acids, vitamin B, organics, herbals and macrominerals – that particularly affect digestion, muscle fatigue and cramping, mental clarity and focus.

YogaEarth’s Nutritional Science Board works with the world’s top ingredient growers and houses in Ayurveda, organics and nutraceuticals to create the holistic supplement. Think steam-cleaned herbal ingredients, certified-organic fruits and veggies, free-form amino acids, ingredients with the highest bioavailability, and no artificial additives or animal-derived products. YogaEarth also produces their FSC-certified packaging in wind-powered facilities with 80-percent minimum post-consumer waste.

The two supplements were developed to serve a different purpose - Balance is designed to help you prepare and perform before you step into Cobra’s Pose, while *Vitality restores core nutrients and rebuilds cellular health and energy after your workout. While YogaEarth was created with yoga on the brain, it carries the same positive effects for any sport or practice to boost your game.

First, you couldn’t find a thing to wear. Then you just had to check your email one last time before you ran out the door. But when you jumped into your car, low and behold, you remember that your lovely vehicle is running on fumes. Now you’re running 20 minutes behind and are stuck at a red light behind dueling senior citizens who can barely see over the wheel.

Stress much?

Being late sucks. Literally. It sucks the positive energy right out of each of us through anger, worry, fear and anxiety – all of which add up to the dreaded “s-word.”

Physical Effects of Excess Stress
According to medicinenet.com, the effects that elevated stress can have on our poor little selves range from:

Headaches

Intestinal problems

Sleep disorders

Anxiety

Mood swings

Muscle tension

Poor diet habits

Increased use of alcohol, drugs and cigarettes

Sound terrible? You’re catching on, Ms. Smarty Pants. The good news is that you, as the “Stress-ee,” have choices when it comes to managing the many things in your life that cause unnecessary stress. Cutting tardiness out of your M.O. is a great start.

The Benefits of Punctuality
Take some tips from Diana DeLonzor, author of Never Be Late Again, so you can quit being such a stress machine:

Get to the root of the problem. Figure out the root cause behind why you’re always late – an ABC News report broke the “why” down into four types of people who are always late. Which one are you?

A. Rationalizer Type – it’s always someone or something else’s fault

B. Absent Minded Professor – You’re forgetful, scattered and disorganized

C. Deadline/Producer Type – You get a psychological zing or adrenaline rush out of having a jam-packed schedule

D. Rebel Type – you get a self-induced high out of defying authority and you feel important when you know people are waiting for you.

Decide you want to change. Notice the effects on family, friends and colleagues. Stop making excuses and commit to fixing the problem.

Verbally announce you’re trying to change. It’s kinda like AA, honey. The first step is admitting it. Ask friends and family to help you but be ready for them to be cynical. Let them have their feelings and show them you’re serious by actually doing it.

Clock yourself and keep a journal. Log how long it really takes to dry your hair or get the kids to school. Get the facts and embrace the truth so that you can plan realistically and set yourself up for success.

Time tasks. Setting a timer for tasks like laundry, taking a shower and talking on the phone can help keep you on track (not to mention save water and electricity).

Be early … no excuses. If the idea of sitting around with nothing to do makes you crazy, bring something you can read, do or text while you wait. Make a list when you wake up of the quick things you need to do that day like pay a bill over the phone, schedule a date with the plumber or wish Gramps a Happy Birthday.

Schedule a 15-minute time cushion before and after commitments. Cramming too much into one day doesn’t allow for the unexpected. Spread your commitments out over the week. Your body and mind will thank you for it.

Better never than late.

– Julie H.

Let’s Move, Little Debbie.

Child obesity has become more prevalent due to unhealthy diets, increased food intake, and inadequate physical activity. According to the CDC, obesity levels among children have tripled over the last 20 years. Seven percent of 15-year-old children are now considered clinically obese.

But the always lovely First Lady, Michelle Obama, has created the Let’s Move! campaign to generate awareness of child obesity and the negative effects it poses for our future. She has made it her business to not only get children moving, but to also improve the food source in public schools across the nation. The First Lady has asked everyone to get involved, so pay attention:

Cook Up Some Change. Hundreds of chefs from more than 37 states gathered on the South Lawn with Michelle Obama earlier this month to support the “Chefs Move to Schools” program. Chefs are encouraged to bond with their local schools to help students learn where food comes from and develop healthy habits. Rachael Ray has stepped up, and currently, 2,330 chefs and 688 schools have signed up to be a part of the Chef’s Move to School Initiative. Are you a gifted chef or maybe know one you that you think should get involved? Send them here to get cooking.

Do Good. Let’s Move! and GOOD Magazine are working together to help address the challenge of childhood obesity by raising awareness. You can start doing some good by entering their contest. They are looking for an infographic that shows the current state of children’s health, and illustrates some avenue to combat the epidemic. Submission are due July 6, and the winner gets lots of perks … like White House blog exposure on theLet’s Move! site and much more.

As the biggest environmental catastrophe in U.S. history continues to spill 60,000 barrels of oil into the ocean each day, the big question remains: When’s it gonna stop? Scientists are working around the clock to come up with solutions, and BP just signed a deal with Kevin Costner’s company, Ocean Therapy Solutions, for 32 units of the “dream machine” that is capable of separating water from oil. The verdict is, nevertheless, still out.

In the midst of the irreparable damage this has done to our oceans and the thousands of people who have lost their livelihood, our marine life off the Gulf of Mexico is in a serious struggle for survival.

Coastal Louisiana’s wetlands account for 40-percent of wetlands in the U.S., while more than 400 fish and wildlife species rely on this habitat for food, shelter and breeding. (Species, not fish) Vast amounts of methane trapped in crude oil are creating “dead zones” that are depleting oxygen and suffocating sea animals. Marshes that are home to sea turtles, bottlenose dolphins and birds are being set aflame, AKA “the burn box,” to prevent oil lying on the surface from making it to the shore. And gulls, pelicans and other birds that land on the water are experiencing deadly hypothermia as the oil destroys the insulating quality of their feathers.

But, we have a choice here: Remain helpless and continue to point fingers at BP, let Obama decide who to chew out or … Do something.

Here are a few things you can do to help:

Sometimes you wish you knew what was going on in that silly little body of yours. You got eight hours of sleep every night last week but felt like a walking Zombie. You’ve been putting on a few extra lb’s though you got enough mileage in last week to make Prefontaine look like a pussy. And the metal detectors went off at the airport the other day and you were, well, metal-less. Hmm … a slight hint?

As it turns out, your hair follicles are quite the crime scene – behind the yellow tape are the clues as to why your body is performing like a two-pump chump.

Mobile nutritionist Meg Gotelli unlocks all the secrets to your nutritional needs through a snip of your hair. Easily collected, Meg comes to your office or home, with bag and scissors in tow, to meet and collect a small hair sample to send in for lab results. Yeah, but are they accurate? Analyzing more than 50,000 hair samples a year, the state-of-the-art lab boasts sophisticated ICP-Mass Spectometry and monthly QA/QC studies to confirm accuracy. If you don’t live in sunny California, Meg can do all of this virtually by sending in a hair follicle via snail mail, then explaining the results and providing consultation via phone and email.

But what’s that snip gonna tell? A lot, indeed. When you get your blood taken by a physician or specialist, it only reveals 24 hours worth of your body’s chemistry. But at the root of your hair, six weeks of your body’s chemistry gets locked into your hair shaft as it grows from your scalp.

Feeling tired or burnt out? Maybe you’ve got adrenal fatigue. Since minerals such as potassium, zinc, magnesium, iron and calcium show up in your results, a hair analyst can identify an imbalance of minerals as an instigator of low energy, as well as which gland is weak. These glands may be tiny, but they are responsible for about 100 bodily tasks, including keeping your energy, hormones and sugar balanced.

Wonder if the lead in your lipstick or your hair dye is in your body? Or maybe why you’re setting off metal detectors like a damn lost treasure at sea? Too much mercury – Cool it on the sushi. If so, Meg puts you on the metal detox program to support your body in getting rid of toxic elements; email support keeps you on target.
In Meg’s philosophy, a big reason for getting your hair mineral analysis is to keep

you healthy not only in the present, but in the future. Beauty and wellness is determined by what you eat, drink and supplement, met by what you don’t.File the case, Caruso. This crime is solved.

You may see her face gracing the pages of Better Homes and Gardens, Lucky and Harper’s Bazaar for her eco thumb, but Sara Snow was getting her green on far before it was hip. The daughter of Tim and Pattie Redmond – the founding family of Eden Foods and pioneers behind the natural foods movement – Sara was raised on composting, organic veggies and a profound respect for nature.

While her dreams to be in the bright lights led her to roles as an Emmy-winning television producer for ESPN’s SportsCentury series and later a morning news reporter for Fox Indianapolis, her roots never snipped their ties. Sara was soon creating eco-lifestyle television concepts for Discovery Channel and advising the first-ever 24-hour green on-air network, Discovery’s “Planet Green.”

Fast forward a few years and a whole lot of buzz about a lil’ theory called “global warming,” and Sara has another exciting snack on her plate – her much-anticipated debut book, Sara Snow’s Fresh Living: The Essential Room-by-Room Guide to a Greener, Healthier Family and Home. She continues to spread the good, green word with regular segments on CNN.com LIVE and columns on Treehugger, while traveling the country to speak about simple and effective ways to green your business, home and community.

We asked the lovely Ms. Snow to share her tips on a healthy, green powder room and personal upkeep. After all, we all need a potty break.

Tip #1: Recycle Your Water. Water is scarce, people. You could be wasting as much as seven gallons of water per minute while you wait for your shower to heat up in the morning. Keep a bucket close by and place it under the spigot as you wait for the water to warm up. Then use this to water your houseplants.

Tip #2: Save the Bath for a Special Occasion. A full bathtub can use as much as 50 to 70 gallons of water! If you must take a bath, plug the drain right away, adjust the temperature as the tub fills up and only fill it half way.

Tip #3: If it’s Yellow, Let it Mellow. When I was young, we did many things to conserve water like turning it off when we brushed our teeth and only flushing the toilet after a few people had used it. But the cardinal rule: If it’s brown, always flush it down!

Tip #4: Keep it Simple. You don’t need overly scented or processed lotions for your face or body. Try a natural oil like Marula Oil by the Leakey Collection. It works to hydrate and heal. Great for your face or parched body parts.

Tip #5: Give Yourself a Healthy Mani-Pedi. The three harshest ingredients in nail polish are formaldehyde, toluene and phthalates. Try a nail polish free from all three. Many big brands are starting to come on board, or try the very hot “chic black” from Suncoat Naturals. It’s vegan, free of the Big 3, and can be removed without chemicals.

Tip #6: Scent Naturally. Instead of traditional perfumes which can be loaded with synthetic fragrances as well as alcohol and petroleum based fillers, try an essential oil blend that is both unique and healthy. I wear the Invoke Essence by Ambre Blends.

Well, getting fit has made a total 360 … literally. Say Welcome Back to the hula hoop! Yes, there was a time when the hula hoop was our greatest enemy. Not only did it separate the coordinated from the clumsy, but it was also a hell of a toy to lug out to the playground. But now, the hoop is being used to give ladies some rockin’ abs.

Introducing Hoopnotica. Celebs like Marisa Tomei, Liv Tyler, and Beyonce are getting in shape for lead roles and demanding tour schedules by hooping it up. Using a weighted-hoop as a form of exercise, Hoopnotica provides an energizing and effective low-impact workout that helps ladies shake off those extra pounds by wiggling their hips – enough to make the world go round.

Actually ladies, “hooping” can burn between 400 to 600 calories an hour – all from spinning a weighted adult sized hoop rhythmically around the waist while listening to cool tunes. That’s better than hitting the treadmill or any midday quickie. Well, maybe. Hooping can:

Tighten your core

Tone muscles

Increase flexibility

Improve coordination

Strengthen your cardiovascular system

Hoopnotica also sells a wide range of colorful weighted travel hoops (with coordinating HoopStraps), in addition to a variety of DVDs, hooping apparel and accessories. Hoopnotica classes are available across the US and Canada and Hoop Groups are rapidly multiplying across the country.

Now, doesn’t that sound like way more fun than scaling sand dunes in the Mohave desert? I would like to think so …

The wonderful week where you swear off white jeans for life, cancel all plans that don’t involve red wine, dark chocolate or a Nicholas Sparks adaptation, and wear undergarments that even your 90-year-old granny wouldn’t be caught dead in on Bingo Tuesday. Don’t you feel hot?

So, why can’t you just get rid of your period? Like, say, adios to The Big Red?

Healthy Bitch Daily’s resident sexpert and bestselling author, Lou Paget, went straight to the source – Dr. Lissa Rankin, OB/GYN and author of the upcoming book, What’s Up Down There?: Questions You’d Only Ask Your Gynecologist If She Was Your Best Friend to get the real scoop.

Is it natural to skip periods with hormones?

Well, no. There’s nothing natural about the birth control pill, the Depo-Provera shot, or the Mirena IUD. Menstrual cycles while taking birth control are not the same as non-hormonal cycles the body has naturally. If you’re not taking birth control, skipping periods can cause overgrowth of the lining of the uterus and lead to problems. But while taking continuous hormones such as Seasonale, skipping periods results from shrinkage of the uterine lining, rather than unshed overgrowth, so there is no need for a monthly period.

Why do you have periods when you’re on the pill?

The only reason you get a period when you’re on the Pill is because those who developed it back in the 1960’s assumed women would prefer to have periods. Why? So they would know they weren’t pregnant. So they would feel “natural.” Now, pharmaceutical companies are rethinking things, since many women surveyed say they would love to skip periods.

How does it work?

When you’re taking the Pill, the period that comes during the placebo week is the body’s natural withdrawal from taking the hormones. By not taking the placebo pills and continuing to take the hormones instead [like extended cycle birth control], the body does not withdraw from the hormones and no period occurs. This is different than missing your menstrual cycle when not taking birth control. While taking continuous birth control, the lining of the uterus gets thin and periods, when they do occur, are often very light.

Is extended cycle birth control as effective as taking birth control pills regularly?

Yes. Like traditional birth control, extended cycle birth control is 99-percent effective if taken correctly, and may even be more effective.

What’s the downside to skipping periods with extended cycle contraception?

Well, it depends how you do it. Birth control pills, the Patch, and the Ring all contain synthetic hormones that may increase the risk of estrogen sensitive problems, such as blood clots and, potentially, breast cancer. Some women are also very sensitive to synthetic hormones and have mood issues, irritability or exacerbation of other health conditions. Using bio-identical hormones to help you skip periods may help as a replacement, but they have not been tested for use as birth control, so there is no bio-identical birth control pill.

Also, because you are skipping the placebo week, you’re getting 25-percent more hormones in your body, which may pose some risk. Although studies to date have demonstrated safety in using extended cycle regimens, we don’t have long-term data yet.

Lastly, menstrual cycles give a lot of information about the health of the body, and skipping them may rob you of this useful barometer of health. For example, an anorexic or competitive athlete will often skip periods, a signal that the body is unfit for pregnancy. If you’re taking extended cycle contraception, you’re masking this signal.

What about the Mirena IUD or Depo-Provera? Is it okay that I don’t get my period with these methods?

Yes. Like other hormonal birth controls, it’s important to understand that these hormones are synthetic. However, because these contraceptives don’t contain estrogen, they are much safer and do not contain many of the risks of the Pill, the Patch or the Ring.

It ain’t always easy being healthy. Between worrying about the number of glasses of water you drank today, and praying your better half remembered to buy whole-wheat pasta instead of white again, it’s easy to neglect what you’re cooking your food in. But in reality, your pots and pans do play a role in your health regimen.

Gracing kitchens for hundreds of years, cast iron cookware is sustainable and health-conscious. Unlike Teflon and steel products, which leaches yucky carcinogenic chemicals into your food, cast iron actually releases iron into your food. And because it lasts a lifetime like Granny’s old broach, it proves its worth in the environmental department.

While we’re big fans of cast iron cookware from Le Creuset, there’s a new kid in town. The brainchild of twin sisters and healthy cooks, Mica and Café McMullen, Green Cooking Pots is a line of enameled cast iron cookware that comes in bright, pretty colors to add some life to the kitchen. Whatever your fancy, Green Cooking Pots allows the cook to taste the rainbow with cookware in haute colors like orange, blue, light blue, red, cream, yellow and green.

The icing on the cupcake? Aside from being eco-friendly, all of their cookware is chemical-free and devoid of any toxic materials

To the McMullen girls, cooking is a holistic endeavor. From the pots on our stove to the oil we cook with, they believe that every step is as important as the food itself. “The way food is prepared is the foundation of healthy eating,” says Mica. “If pans are being used that emit harmful chemicals, what’s the point of eating your vegetables?”

Dig in with the entire line of products, which include: grill pans, dutch ovens, pots, skillets, sauce pans and roasting pans. Prices range from $47 to $127, with four to 13-piece cookware sets running from $131 to $695. Cook your heart out at www.greencookingpots.com.

Better strike while the iron’s hot.
