You’ve done sweaty vinyasa classes and maybe even that crazy trapeze yoga.
But have you done Kundalini?
HBD talked with Kundalini expert Guru Jagat, of the RA MA Institute for Applied Yogic Science and Technology in Venice, Calif. Check out the scoop on the hottest yoga trend since Lululemon…
HBD: What is Kundalini yoga?
Guru Jagat: Kundalini Yoga is a technology of upgrading your human operating system. Meaning your mind is sharper, your metabolism is revved, your blood is clean and your hormonal emotional balance is stable. So you look better, feel better, make decisions quicker and don’t react to the daily challenges of your life the same way.
HBD: What makes it unique/different from other styles of yoga?
Guru Jagat: It’s a complete system to work out your complete self. Mentally, physically and psycho-emotionally. Kundalini Yoga is ancient yogic science that is anti-aging and nervous system-strengthening so that you experience the stressors and stimulus of your daily life differently and have a completely different experience of your chronological aging, ie., you age gracefully.
HBD: Will I have to chant, om and meditate?
Guru Jagat: Yes you will have to chant, om and meditate. Eighty-four meridians are on the the soft palette of the mouth. The tongue stimulates them through the chanting, which in turn stimulates the hypothalamus, who then commands the secretion of hormones from the pituitary gland to change the metabolism and change the biorhythms of the brain to combat depression, anxiety and stress.
HBD: Talk to me about mind-body benefits of Kundalini.
Guru Jagat: The biggest benefit of Kundalini Yoga is how FAST it is. In 90 seconds you can totally change your mood, your energy level, your cravings, your negative thought patterns and emotional commotional reactivity.
HBD: Why should someone give it a try?
Guru Jagat: Beware of increases sense of harmony, peace, energy, fulfillment, creativity, and focus. Other side effects include wanting to do MORE Kundalini Yoga and the best buzz of your life BAR NONE.
HBD: How do you stay healthy? Give us a rundown of your daily self-care routine.
Guru Jagat: I’m a fanatic, but…
3:45 am: Cold shower to stimulate circulation and lymphatic system. Also to get the “bitch” out.
4 am – 6 am: Daily practice, which includes physical yoga and meditation
Green Juice from Moon Juice. Raw Coconut Cream Ice Cream from Kippy’s Ice Cream. Repeat.
10-11pm Go to sleep in order to rejuvenate my organs
HBD: Is eating “clean” a bigger part of yoga than people give it credit for?
Guru Jagat: As you become more aware of your body and your health it is a given that you will begin to change your eating habits. You will naturally be drawn to foods that are more anti-inflammatory such as seed grains like quinoa and greens.
HBD: Most importantly, what do I wear to class?
Guru Jagat: Comfy clothes. No big deal unless you’re itching to rock a turban.
HBD: What qualities/qualifications should I look for in a Kundalini practitioner?
Guru Jagat: Look for the reality in the eyes and the proof of their practice, meaning are they the kind of human being you are interested in learning from.
